For the future of Thorli
'Thorli' as it is affectionately known, is a natural wonder and true gift - a world class surf spot amongst the rugged and inhospitable Icelandic coast. It is the one place that Icelandic surfers can dependably surf quality waves on a regular basis, close to home.
As ongoing industrial development has threatened the future of this spot over recent years, BBFÍ and it's members have worked tirelessly to advocate for the future of this wave, our surf culture and the opportunity for Icelandic people to connect with the ocean in this way for generations to come.
To be clear, this situation is incredibly serious. All development approvals for the landfill were recently granted by Icelandic authorities, with the local council immediately beginning to move rocks towards the sea. A legal appeal was filed and a three day peaceful protest held the machines at bay. We have a temporary pause on the work for 1-2 weeks while The Environmental and Natural Resources Appeals Committee reviews our case, but once a decision is reached work may begin immediately.
We have engaged the services of a leading environmental lawyer and a world renowned coastal engineering specialist at considerable cost to the association and local community.
Legal Support – Ensuring we have the best environmental legal advice possible in our fight to protect the surf area.
Expert Environmental & Wave Studies – Providing independent surveying and modelling data to counteract misleading reports issued by the developers
Community Advocacy & Awareness – We want to stand with the local community to bring cultural and economic benefits to the area. Surfing in Iceland is a newly emerging sport that the country is still getting to know. We have to show people just why it's something worth fighting for and how it can create unique benefits for a wave-rich location like þorlákshöfn.
If we don't act carefully now, Iceland will never get the chance to enjoy a surf culture in the same way countries all over the world do.
Let´s not tell Icelanders that they have to fly overseas if they want to be a surfer. If we ever have a surfer in the Olympics one day, they will get there by practising at this wave. There is a good chance they will even be born in this town.
All donations big and small are much appreciated by the Icelandic surf community.
This film tells the story of the beautiful community that has grown around this world famous surf break in Þorlákshöfn and their ongoing battle to save the wave from destruction.
If we don’t act now, this world-class break could be lost forever.
