María has tried and was completely fascinated by this refreshing activity and plans to set up a mobile sauna in Akureyri and invite Northerners and tourists to enjoy it. Mobile Sauna is something that is known around the world and has been gaining ground in Iceland recently, or more precise in Reykjavík. Mobile Saunas are placed in different places to be able to enjoy the sauna close to nature.

The ceremony or the sauna takes place in such a way that the guests settle in the very hot sauna that is heated by a wood stove. The Gusmeister (the person who controls the sauna) splashes water on the stones and turns up the heat for 15 minutes (or as long as it takes to empty one bucket of water) and waves a towel or a fan towards people to increase the heat for each person. Between sessions, guests step out into nature and cool off for a while. Some take a dip in the sea and others let the cool air suffice. This is repeated three times and is a kind of ritual. Sometimes essential oils are added to the water which enhances the experience and music is also an important part of the experience.
