GusGus' former 9-member utopian democracy contains two opposite poles today; Biggi Veira and Daníel Ágúst.
According to some, GusGus has become a dictatorship under the iron high heel of "The Virus", who would rather destroy the band than give up his control. Biggi and Daniel's dynamic current collaboration sheds light on GusGus' thorny history; victories, betrayals and future.
Biggi Veira and Daníel Ágúst are like night and day; complete opposites. Their unconditional love of music is the reason why the collaboration works.
Or does it?
The name GusGus is world-famous, but so far Biggi Veira and Daníel Ágúst have protected their privacy and not let their fans in all the way.
The viewers' experience is to be a fly on the wall, and it is up to them to assess if Biggi is a genius with tyrannical tendencies or a simply lovable transvestite. The viewer must also assess whether Daniel has the heart and patience of a saint or whether he is simply a pushover.
Contrasts, paradoxes, extremes and drama have always been at the core of the driving force of one of Iceland's most tenacious bands. But are there darker sides to what has been called the "toxic relationship" between Biggi Veira and Daníel?
The film will consist of a combination of new and vintage footage. The new material will be Biggi and Daníel in modern times amidst their human struggle of life. We will interview former members of GusGus as they detail their part in the band's history, as well as the newest member of the band Margrét Rán.
There is a wealth of material from the past. Photographs, videos, concert recordings, interviews and travels abroad that have been filmed in one way or another. The stories that will be told in the current day interviews will be illustrated with rich material from the past.
Interviews with past GusGus members reveal the band's history and what each artist contributed to the whole of what GusGus is today. We learn about GusGus' rapid rise, world fame, colorful career and constant rotation of band members.
The theme of the film is human fallibility and deep love of music, but as the film progresses it also becomes clear that the filmmakers themselves have much to do with the birthing of this phenomenon, GusGus. It was Arni & Kinski who invited Daníel, Biggi and the rest of the original lineup to be a part of the group.
The filmmakers Arni & Kinski are Stefán Árni Þorgeirsson and Siggi Kinski. They began their career in the early 1990s making music videos, documentaries, photography and graphic design. In addition to founding GusGus in 1995, they created award winning short films in collaboration with Sigur Rós from 2001 - 2011. They have also made numerous music videos as well as tv commercials for major US companies. Today they live and work in Iceland.
Hrefna Hagalín is a dynamic young film producer. She graduated from The Icelandic Film School in 2010 and her thesis film was nominated the best short at “Eddan” The Icelandic Film & Tv Academy Awards.
She got her experience both as a production assistant on bigger foreign productions and as a tv commercial producer working at a couple of advertising agencies. She has produced short documentaries, music videos, short films, commercials and this is the first time she is the main producer of a full length documentary.Today she also runs a production company that specializes in servicing foreign film productions shooting in Iceland.
Daníel Ágúst and Biggi Veira support this project. They have given permission for the use of all material owned by GusGus to make the film. Also, past GusGus members will take part in interviews and help weave the group’s history into the documentary.
Shooting will begin at the end of April and go through end of May, after which post-production will begin. The scheduled premiere is in the winter of 2023. Marketing for the film will begin this autumn and after the premiere in Iceland the film will go abroad to festivals.
The project has already received a script/production grant from the Icelandic Film Center and we are now looking for a partnership with you to be able to complete funding.
The total cost of making the film is ISK 27 million.
We have already received a script and development grant from the Icelandic Film Center and we are committed to a production grant.
Síminn Television has shown great interest in the project from the beginning, and they have now confirmed that they will broadcast it in Iceland. We are in negotiations to show the film in more markets.
We hope to achieve our € 20,000 crowd funding goal at Karolina fund.
But what if more money is raised?
We will use all the extra money raised to increase the quality of the documentary. For example, to "animate" photographs to reinforce the stories we get from the interviews.
Tell your friends about the project.
Tell all GusGus fans and music lovers that something big is coming up : )
We need all the support we can get!
