Further Information

How did the project start?

This project started on the 20th of March 2021, the day after the volcanic eruption in Fagradalsfjall. Amy was so facinated by the eruption she decided to paint one painting a day of the volcano while it remained active, or at least 100 days if it would live longer.

The first 50 paintings were painted everyday and cover the first 50 days of the eruption from the 20th March-8th May. At that point the eruption had started to stabilise and looked very similar most days, so for the next 50 Amy picked out the most interesting days to paint. Amy went to the volcano twice to paint on location 'en plein air' but the other paintings were painted through RÚV and MBL's webcams.

The project was featured by the tv show Landinn, you can watch the interview with Amy HERE.

About the book

The book is a celebration of finishing all 100 paintings. They were painted mostly in oils, some in gouache, in an A5 sketchbook, with the milestones 50 and 100 painted on larger canvases. All of them have been collated together and presented in this book in full colour where people can see the amazing process and changes of the volcano through the eyes of the artist. You can also see some "behind the scenes" photos and process shots of how Amy paints.

The soft cover book spans 120 pages and is 17x21cm in size, printed on quality magnum satin paper. There is not a lot of text in the book, but it will be in English.

This book is an ideal christmas gift this year, and perfect for any volcano or art enthusist! We hope you want to support this project and help to bring this book to realisation.

Examples from the book

Below you can see mock-ups of the book, the layout design is currently being worked on so may change slightly from the examples shown.

About the team

THE ARTIST

Amy Alice Riches is from the UK but has been living in Iceland for the past 3 years, enchanted by the Icelandic landscape which she loves to paint.

She is a graphic designer and a freelance concept artist specialising in background, environment paintings and illustration. She loves painting both digitally and traditionally in oils - preferably with a cup of tea at hand.

She is always looking to improve her skills and really enjoys working 'en plein air' - trying to capture the essence of a time and place, creating a window through which others can share the experience.

THE EDITOR, SOCIAL MEDIA & WHIP-CRACKER

Ragnheiður Ásta Valgeirsdóttir is an artist born and living in Iceland. She works in graphic design and illustration and her interests in art lie with the human figure, nature and costume design.

In this project however she has acted more as a manager and Amy's right hand than as an artist - helping Amy with scanning, editing, social media, encouraging her to keep painting (sometimes nicely sometimes with some butt kicking) and most importantly - making her tea to keep her going!

What are you supporting?

By supporting this project you are helping us bring this wonderful volcano painting book to realisation! This is the first art book Amy has ever created and the goal is to cover printing/material expenses not to make profit. This book has foremost been created to celebrate the completion of this 100 paintings project and to share the eruption and Amy's paintings with the world.

What happens next?

When you support the project your credit card will be charged, once we are fully funded we will send the book to print! Then we will deliver the book, along with any other extra goodies you ordered, to you in December!

If the project is not fully funded, then your card will be refunded!

We cannot guarantee that orders outside of Iceland will make it to you before Christmas, especially as the post is quite busy over the festive period, but we will do all in our power to do so!
