Globally, people produce around 13 million tonnes of textile waste every year making the fashion industry one of the most polluting in the world. I want to contribute to a cleaner environment by recycling old clothes that have been thrown away and sew new fashionable clothes.

Further Information

Welcome!

My name is Halldóra (Dóra), and I am 22 years old. Designing is my passion and I have always wanted to sew my own clothes from second-hand fabric. Last fall I suffered from a medical condition that made basic activities such as studying, sitting and walking difficult due to excruciating pain. As I gradually recovered, I wanted to pursue a pain-free hobby, so I tried practicing using my sewing machine. However, due to my condition I had to sit on the floor as sitting in a chair was too painful.

Since my discovery of sewing as a hobby, I have been sewing non-stop, and my favorite is to turn old clothes into something fashionable. I get a lot of inspiration for patterns on Instagram and YouTube. The top that I am wearing in the picture below is an example of my design.

I am fundraising because it is my goal to put up a website where I sell my own design. I want my clothes to be of high quality, and therefore I need to upgrade my equipment, for example invest in an overlock sewing machine, and improve my working environment. I have always liked recycling all sorts of things, and I believe you should not throw things away because you can find them a new purpose. The website will mostly contain bikinis, tops, dresses, hair ties, and comfortable flared pants all made of recycled clothes and fabric. I also want to make more bags, but my current sewing machine does not handle that very well.

I love sewing bikinis. My goal is to make bikinis from recycled polyester and from garments made of nylon fabric, for example, old swimsuits, gym clothes, or dresses. The pink bikini in the picture above was made from a dress, and the black one was made from a top I received from my grandmother that she was no longer using

Here is a set made from a dress I once had. I didn’t really like the dress, and I never used it, so I decided to make a top and a skirt out of it. The result was good, and I have used it much more than I ever used the dress. I often sew scrunchies to match the outfits I make. It is so important to recycle because, although a person might dislike the fit or colour of his/her clothes, they can easily be turned into a beautiful garment suitable for the person; it is all about the fit and the pattern used to make the piece.

I have made an honest effort to sew bags, and it is certainly something I want to keep doing, however, my sewing machine is very inefficient with making bags as it cannot really handle it. These two below barely made it :)
