We are a worker's cooperative that want to open a vegan café on Hringbraut.
Fraktal is a worker-run place formed by a group of people of different origins. It offers work desks for artists to rent and a venue for cultural, political and artistic events. We want to create a business that is fair, non-hierarchical, democratic, inclusive, sustainable and both locally and globally active.
FRAKTAL's evolution is directly linked to the environmental issues of our planet, never forgetting the importance of nature and animals that live on it. This is why we want to include a café that provides a duly needed vegan alternative in the city, one that will become a sustainable venue for all kinds of events.
Not only do we want to exclusively provide plant-based and sustainable products, but also create a community hub where everybody feels welcome to attend the wide range of events - or just to hang out. :) Our future guests are an essential part of the mosaic of fractals that we want to build.
FRAKTAL wants to be an example of how to run a fair worker’s environment, while being environmentally aware and democratically active as much as possible.
FRAKTAL is a place that has been founded and created through volunteer work and out of our own pockets when it comes to rent. While we will continue to do so, we need your help to achieve our vision of a self-sustainable café. We need to finance:
- License to run a café
- Renovations (e.g. painting the walls, plumbing)
- Housewares (e.g. cutlery, cups)
- Setting up the bar
- Furniture
- Coffee equipement
We estimated that this will cost us around 7000€.
FRAKTAL is a worker’s cooperative of 10 people of different origins (Afghanistan, France, Germany, Iceland, Poland, Spain) and different backgrounds. We are waiters, care workers, journalists, activists, programmers, artists, psychologists, minimum wage workers, physiotherapists, labor organizers...
We unite in the vision that together we can build another culture of business - one that is self-sustainable, democratic, inclusive, responsible towards the climate, local and creative: a seed for a better world.
FRAKTAL held its first event during the 2019/20 winter as an introduction of our project to the community. We offered vegan food, and several musicians performed (DJ Lamp Vader, Supersport, Flaaryr, Jeb & Ewa) while the artist Baba Ada painted a wall live. We were delighted to see that so many people attended the event and showed their interest in the project
FRAKTAL has already been a venue for a diverse array of events - ambient music evenings, dance workshops, lectures, discussions, a fermentation workshop, yoga classes - and we are aiming to have many, many more.
We will provide you with updates of the renovations through our Facebook page (FRAKTAL Reykjavik) and of course, you are always welcome to attend one of the events we are hosting and have a chat. FRAKTAL is built on cooperation and we would love to hear your feedback and creative input!
If you want to contact us and you don’t use Facebook, just send us a message to fraktal.reykjavik@gmail.com!
