Well over a year ago I looked through discussions on social media about matters concerning disabled people, and after reading some comments I thought to myself: Have these people never seen a disabled person?
That gave me the idea for this performance, where I, the invalid Bára Halldórs, am displayed in an environment people usually never see a disabled person in. Home alone, dealing with what makes him or her disabled. Usually people see the disabled when they are reasonably upbeat and have been able to go outside, which often needs a lengthy preparation or is just a matter of coincidence. Those who have a visible illness or handicap are pretty obvious to anyone, but even they have a hidden side. I am only one example but I have been doing this same performance sort of through Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram and other similar media for a few years.
After the big media storm last autumn (if you have not heard of the so-called Klaustur scandal, check out this article which explains it) a friend of mine connected with RVKFringe approached me with an idea. To use the attention created by those events to push forward my agenda through this performance we had often discussed. The time for action was now.
So now I start this journey, inexperienced but hopeful, and for the project to succeed I need your help. I am of course disabled with limited energy and therefore need to hire assistants. I also need to buy material, have it moved to location, print posters and take care of all kinds of different things I just had no idea I needed for a project like this. Live and learn.
I am going to give you access to my bedside, show you all the bureaucratic struggle, my articles, photos of me both during my best and worst moments, personal things and really just anything that I can think of.
The show will be open to all, no entrance fee, and if you want to hear from me I will be on social media when I can. After the show I will sit down with those who are interested and discuss the performance, your questions and thoughts.
