If you don‘t read Icelandic, you probably should be looking for something else to support. But just in case you have an Iclandic (or an Icelandic reading) friend, whom you really want to surprise, you just might find it worth your while to read on.
In 1974 two men disappeared in Iceland. Gudmundur Einarsson, 18 years old, went to a dance in Hafnarfjordur on the 26th of January. Geirfinnur Einarsson, 33 years old, went out to meat somebody shortly before half past ten p.m. on the 19th of November. Neither of them has been seen since. Their bodies have never been found.
Although no connection has ever been found between these two men, the police arrested in all ten people from December 1975 to November 1976 and in February 1980 the High Court of Iceland sentenced six of them to prison. Four of them for manslaughter but the other two for connivance (knowing but not telling).
Astonishingly this book is mainly based on exactly the same evidence as the sentences, but the conclusion is very different. The High Court said „guilty“. Based on mainly the same evidence the author of this book says„not guilty“.
New evidence was actually found during the research of this book. A piece of paper has been officially open to everybody for more than 40 years, but nobody gave it a look – until now.
But if you don‘t read Icelandic, you should wait for the English translation.
Jón Daníelsson is a former journalist and wrote a series of articles on this subject in Helgarpósturinn when Sævar Ciesielskis appeal was turnd down by the High Court of Iceland in 1997.
